After leaving Southern Germany and the Black forest we headed in to Austria. We would follow a route in the motorhome that would not use toll roads hoping for wonderful scenery and fresh mountain air. There was also one road we could not wait to drive, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. This is the highest surfaced mountain pass road in Austriaconnects Bruck in the state of Salzburg with Heiligenblut in Carinthia via Fuscher Törl and Hochtor Pass at 2,504 m.
Driving through the ski resorts of St. Anton Am Arlberg and Alpe Rauz was breathtaking. The clean air and lack of traffic was so calming. We even managed a night wild camping just off the main road near the local Police station.
Plodding on we made our way slowly across the mountain roads passing through Pettnue am Arlberg in the Tyrol toward Landeck and Imst
Being a big fan of Ski Sunday I found myself passing through all the places I had only ever seen on the television but they were always covered in snow. How amazing places like Schwaz, Obsteig, Innsbruck, Kitzbuhel and St. Johann look without the snow.
Salzberg
After leaving Salzberg we made a diversion in to Bavaria and made our way to Zell am See via Leogang. We had offered to volunteer at the home of the Ironman 70.3 triathlon and hoped to cycle to route.
It was time.... Driving one of the most famous roads in Europe! The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is the highest surfaced mountain pass road in Austria and a popular tourist attraction.
Yes! there is even a glacier to view on this amazing road. After taking in the view we cross the border in to Italy...
