We held off going to Northern Europe for a while in favour of warmer destinations and although it rained a lot when we finally went, it was certainly a trip worth taking. Our visit was during the summer month of August, but be warned if you go as you'll still need a rain coat and maybe a sweater or two. Cruising was a great way to get there as most itineraries include several countries. We sailed out of Harwich in South East England and visited Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, St. Petersburg in Russia and Estonia. It wasn't all smooth sailing, particularly where the Baltics and the North Sea meet; there were a few green faces as we sailed through but on the whole it was a great destination.

Finland Helsinki
Estonia Tallin
The air seemed particularly crisp and fresh in Finland and Norway and we really enjoyed learning about the shipping heritage of Denmark. A highlight was our visit to The Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood, one of the main sights of Saint Petersburg then we took a cycling tour in Estonia and visited heritage sites showing traditional domestic buildings.

We enjoyed this trip but it was more cultural with a very low number of school children and quite possibly a large number of school teachers on board. It made for a very relaxed cruise although the sea could get a bit rough at times.
